Summer Songs Here's to hoping that all of you had a wonderful and relaxing Memorial Day weekend and are all ready for summer! Though we have fantastic weather almost all year round here in Southern California, summer is still one of the best seasons for getting out and enjoying all of those great ourdoor activities - not to mention summer parties and barbecues that, of course, would not be complete without music! Happy summer from Pacific Harps!
Almost anyone who has an instrument can advertise themselves as a musician - but are all musicians the same and how can you tell them apart? 1) How long has the musician been playing and how many of your type of event has the musician performed before? The primary difference between a music student/semi professional and a fully professional musicians is experience.
2) What kind of credentials and training does the musician have? Some musicians do not read music, and so have limited flexibility and repertoire, some have a masters degree from a recognized college – this is a very wide range of training! It will ultimately affect the result that you get at your event.
3) Does the musician have recordings that you can listen to? It is a very good idea to listen to the musician before you decide to hire.
4) Can the musician play the type of music that you would like for your event? Some only play a particular type of music, while others can play anything that you ask for (well almost anything!)
5) Does the musician (or agency) work with a performance agreement, or provide you with some kind of paperwork so that you can be assured that no matter what you will have a great musician for your event? We have been called at the last minute many times to fill in for a musician who has cancelled and not supplied an adequate (or any) substitute. Unexpected things happen to everyone, but you must be sure that you are covered for your occasion. A professional musician or agency will ALWAYS use a contract. It is only through experience that a muscian develops a sense of responsibility to the client and to the audience. A truly professional musician will be fully prepared, arrive in a timely manner, and deliver a solid performance without the need for any excuses! You do not need to be worrying about the music on the day of your event - you need it to be seamless.
