Marriage on the Rocks!

For this marriage, being on the rocks - literally - was simply gorgeous!  The Rock Garden at Los Angeles' Police Academy is one of the city's best kept secrets  - quite a climb up the fifty-seven (yes, fifty-seven!) steps to where the ceremony site is situated, but well worth it when you get there!  The setting is lovely, complete with a waterfall backdrop, rock pool and lush overhanging trees and greenery.  On a lower level is an area for the outdoor reception (so while it's true that the DJs don't have to climb as high as the harpist, it's still a haul for them too, though they don't seem to mind) and catering is provided onsite.  What is not provided, however, is a wedding coordinator - and here it's a very good idea to have one as the steps can make set up a little more challenging than at other venues.  Don't be fooled though - regardless of the extra effort, this unique venue is a rare beauty!

All You Ever Wanted to Know About...Laser Harps??

The laser harp, both cool to play and to look at (much like ours!), is a musical instrument made of light. A fan of beams shoots up from the floor into the night sky, and the performer can create music by placing their hands in the beams.  Breaking the light beam produces notes.  Sliding the hand along the beam also changes the sound.  And though it does not produce any sound by itself, it creates MIDI data that can be connected to any modern synthesizer.

“Who thought of this thing?” you ask.

Working for over 30 years with visuals, a man by the name of Bernard Szajner began his journey making projections, slides and special effects for rock groups.  Later, he was also the first technician in France to use lasers for visual effects.  The beginning of the laser harp, however, was at the Paris planetarium, where Snajner coordinated shows that consisted of  him projecting improvised visuals on the dome of the planetarium as experimental electronic musicians would perform live improvised music.  Becoming excited at the idea that maybe he could produce the music himself in order to get the best possible match between music and visuals, it struck him that he should create an instrument (technically, an interface between Szajner’s body and synthesizers that would actually produce the sound) that would allow him to realize his dreams of producing live music and visuals solo. As he had been using lasers to provide a visualization of music, his idea was simply to reverse the process!  In his work with lasers, he had split one beam of light into many, and it quickly struck him that these separated beams were like a luminous keyboard.  He wanted to find a way to trigger notes while “touching” these beams, and thus was the beginning of the laser harp - the name originating from the separated beams of light bearing a resemblance to an acoustic harp.  In 1981, the first laser harp was born and has since been used extensively by artist Jean-Michel Jarre, and most recently British electronica musician Little Boots.  Click on the video to check it out!

Australian harpist Carolyn Sykes has been performing in Australia, Asia, Europe and the United States for the past 30 years.  She came to Los Angeles fifteen years ago to study for her Masters Degree at the California Institute of the Arts, and has been a manager with HUI for the past three years.  The showroom in Pasadena features two sections, one for pedal harps and one for lever harps.  Carolyn has also established her private teaching and performing studio Pacific Harps, which you can see more of at www.pacificharps.com.  Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have or to schedule a harp appointment!
